Stephen Hartwell Dutton
Stephen was born in Vermont on 2 October 1798.1,2,3,4,5,6 He was the son of Stephen Dutton and Betsey Hartwell. Stephen was probably age 10 and under 16 in Stephen Dutton's household in the 1810 Census taken in Chester, Windsor County, Vermont.7 As a child he was "warned out" of Rockingham, Windham County, Vermont, on 29 November 1814 with Stephen Dutton.8,9 He married Lemira Hodgman in Springfield, Windsor County, Vermont, on 12 September 1816.10,11,12,13,14 Stephen was a head of family, as "Stephen M. Dutton", engaged in agriculture age 16-26, in the 1820 Census taken in Manchester, Bennington County, Vermont.15 Stephen was a head of family, age 30 to 40, in the 1830 Census taken in Rockingham, Windham County, Vermont.16 Stephen was a head of family, age 50 to under 60 and engaged in agriculture, in the 1840 Census taken in Rockingham. A possible composition of the household was Stephen H. age 41, his wife Lemira age 40, and their children Edward 21, Josephus 19, Jasper 17, Plynn 15, Arvilla 13, Horatio 10, Samuel 8, Perrin 6, Stephen D. 4, Edith 1, and Nancy a newborn. Stephen H. and his oldest sons are probably the six engaged in agriculture.17 He was a head of household in the 21 August 1850 census taken in Rockingham, as "S.H. Dutton" a laborer age 51; his son Edward lived on the adjacent farm; Lemira Hodgman resided in the same household, as "Lemira Dutton" age 50; as did Samuel Cyril Dutton, a student and laborer age 18; Perrin Smith Dutton, a student and laborer age 16; Stephen Derrick Dutton, a student age 14; Edith Anne Lemira Dutton, a student age 11; Nancy Clarentine Dutton, a student age 10; Ancy Clementine Dutton, a student age 7; Thomas Holester Dutton, a student age 6; and Joseph Hodgman III, as "Joseph W. Hodgman", a farmer age 78, although that this Joseph W. Hodgman and Lemira's brother Joseph Hodgman "III" are the same person is not proved.13 He was a head of household in the 13 June 1860 census taken in Springfield a farmer age 61; his personal property was valued at $400, the equivalent of $8,200 in the year 2000; Lemira Hodgman resided in the same household, a housewife age 61; as did Ancy Clementine Dutton, doing housework age 18; Thomas Holester Dutton, a student age 16; and Edith Anne Lemira Dutton, as "Edith A. L." age 12 (in error).18 He was a head of household in the 1870 census taken in Springfield a farmer age 71; his real estate was valued at $800, his personal property at $225, the equivalent of $13,500 (total) in the year 2000; hiis son Josephus lived next door; Lemira Hodgman resided in the same household, as "Lemera Dutton" keeping house at age 71.11 Stephen died on 17 February 1875 in Chester at age 76.19,20 He was buried in the Summer Hill Cemetery in Springfield. He was also said to be a stonecutter, and was the progenitor of the Duttons who had family reunions in Springfield in the late 1800s and again in the 1930s-50s.21

  7. [S104] Dutton, Stephen, 1810 US Census, Chester, Windsor County, Vermont; NARA M252 Roll 65, pg. 442, although the male in this houshold age 16 to under 26 fits Stephen's son Levi, there is a Levi Dutton who is a head of family in Chester in this census that I believe to be Stephen's son; I speculate that this male 16-25 is Thirza's husband Solomon Fish, although he was actually 28 years old.
