5-greats-grandfather of Darrell Allen Martin.
Joseph was born on 3 November 1730. He was the son of William Hartwell III and Deborah Wheeler?. There is a "Joseph Hartwell" who served with Captain Josiah Fish's Company "in the service of the State of Vermont, from the beginning of the campaign, 1781, to the 30th of June in sd year, inclusive". He apparently continued in the unit, as the same name appears in the list of Capt. Fish's Co. "in Col. Samuel Fletcher's Battalion, in the service of the state of Vermont, 1781 (commencing July 1st and ending with the close of the campaign)." His pay commenced 1 July 1781 and ended 12 November 1781, 132 days service. He was discharged. It is not established that this is the same Joseph Hartwell. Joseph died in March 1803 at age 72.
