Thomas Olcott

(circa 1609 - February 1654/55)

9-greats-grandfather of Darrell Allen Martin.
Thomas probably came to New England between 1632 and 1635; he appeared at Hartford, CT about 1638. He was involved in real estate transactions in Hartford from 1639, and between 1640 and 1648 acquired property in Wethersfield, CT. He was an original proprietor of Hartford; his lot in 1640 is exhibited on the ground plan with his name written "Alcock". (The spelling "Alcot" was also used often for his surname.) On 21 January 1640 he was chosen one of the constables of Hartford. His chief interest was in trading, which took him to nearby colonies and as far afield as Maryland and Virginia. Richard Bennett, Governor of those two colonies from 1652 to 1657, was a customer. On one of these trips south he fell sick, and died before returning home. Thomas was born in England circa 1609. He married Abigail Porter circa 1636. Thomas died in February 1654/55 in Virginia. He was buried in the cemetery behind the Centre Congregational Church in Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut. His body was returned to Hartford from Virginia, which must have been unusual for that period..
