Stephen was born in January 1857.1,2 He was the son of Joseph Alanson Dean and Arvilla Maria Dutton. An alternate form of his name was Joseph Steven Dean.3 He was a resident in the household of Joseph Alanson Dean in the 4 June 1860 census taken in Genoa, Livingston County, Michigan, as "Joseph L." age 2.4 He was a resident in the household of Joseph Alanson Dean in the 25 July 1870 census taken in Genoa, Mich., as "Joseph S." age 12. He was a resident in the household of Joseph Alanson Dean in the 1880 census taken in Genoa, Mich., as "Stephen" age 22.4 He married Artie Bravener in 1888.5 He married Susie Mondy in 1899.6 He was a head of household in the 7 June 1900 census taken in Genoa, Mich., as "Stephen J." age 42, a farmer; Susie Mondy resided in the same household, as "Susie J. Dean" age 19; as did Joseph Alanson Dean, age 75. He was a resident in the household of Delmark Johnson in the 9 January 1920 census taken in Oceola, Livingston County, Michigan, as "Stephen Dean" age 61, a farm laborer, a widower and brother-in-law to Delmark. He was a resident in the household of Willard A. Dean in the 1930 census taken in Lansing, Ingham County, Michigan, as "Joseph S." age 74, father of Willard. He was a resident in the household of W. Vester Mallison in the 22 April 1930 census taken in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan, as "Stephen Dean" age 72, father-in-law to Vester.
