William was born in Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, on 19 August 1671.1 He was the son of Samuel Hartwell and Ruth Wheeler. He married Ruth Webber? circa 1702.2 "He settled in what is now the southern part of Bedford in 1729, mem. of comm. to organize new church preparatory to the separation of that town from Concord; among the earliest signers of the covenant. He was a determined contestant for his personal rights, as evinced by his persistent litigation with the town of Concord over right of way for a road, bet. 1700 and 1710."3 William died on 11 December 1742 at age 71.4
