John was born in Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, on 23 February 1640/41.1 He was the son of William Hartwell and Jazen (--?--). He married Priscilla Wright on 1 June 1664.2 He married Elizabeth Wright on 23 October 1682.3 "He served in King Philip's war, reported by Capt. Thos. Wheeler as a member of his company which marched to the defence of Quaboag, now Brookfield. . . . He was made a freeman of the colony 21 Mar. 1689-90."4 John died of smallpox on 12 January 1703/4 in Concord, Mass., at age 62.5
