William Hartwell
(following 12 March 1613/14 - 12 March 1689/90)
9-greats-grandfather of Darrell Allen Martin.
William was born possibly in Kent, England, following 12 March 1613/14.1 William Hartwell was among the earliest settlers of Concord, MA, quite possibly a member of the original pioneer party in September 1635. He probably reached there, with his previous whereabouts unknown, by 16362. He was made a freeman of the colony 18 May 16423. He was road overseer, with Timothy Wheeler, for the west quarter in 1663-1664. In 1672 he was one of a nine-man committee appointed to draw up guidelines for the conduct of the selectmen4. He was made "corporal of the troop of horse for Middlesex County" in 1671 and became vice-quartermaster under Henry Woodis in 16734. There is no mention of him participating in King Philip's War, probably due to his advanced age. His descendants have remarked upon the prevalence among them of a "Hartwell nose". He married Jazen (--?--) circa 1637.5 William died on 12 March 1689/90 in Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.6 He was buried probably in the Hill cemetery in Concord, Mass..
