Darrell was born in Springfield Hospital in Springfield, Windsor County, Vermont, on 16 September 1949.1,2,3,4,5 He is the son of Clifton Carroll Martin and Kathelyn Mae Dutton. Darrell Allen Martin was described as 5 feet 11 inches tall as an adult, blood type A negative, brown hair, grey eyes. (an unknown memo value). He became an Eagle Scout 5 December 1966, as part of Troop 15. (It may be of interest to note that the first Boy Scout Troop in America was organized in Vermont.).6 He graduated on 13 June 1967 from Springfield High School in Springfield the class valedictorian.7 In the summer of 1967, the family removed to to Union Lake, Oakland County, Michigan when Bryant Computer Products was moved by its parent Excello Corporation. He was working at Word of Life Camp in the Adirondacks at the time, and went from there directly to college. He was a National Merit Scholarship Finalist, entering Wheaton College, Ill., in the fall of 1967, as a Merit Scholar. He began military service on 14 August 1969 when he was drafted into the US Army. His Basic Training was at Fort Bragg, N.C. and his Advanced Training in General Supply was at Fort Jackson, S.C. He served in Vietnam from January 1970 to April 1971, almost all of that time with the 228th Supply & Service Company (Direct Support) or Headquarters & Headquarters Company, both of 277th S&S Battalion, 29th General Support Group, Saigon Support Command. He was the Soldier of the Month for the 29th General Support Group in September 1970. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant, and was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service. He separated from active duty immediately on leaving Vietnam April 1971, and was honorably discharged August 1975. He graduated in August 1975 from Wheaton College in Wheaton, DuPage County, Illinois, with a B.A. in Psychology, completing his education under the G.I. Bill. He has accomplished nothing of real note since his graduation from college. He resided in Carol Stream, DuPage County, Illinois, on 11 April 1981.8 He married Deborah [Stephanie] Niedfeldt in Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Wheaton, Ill., on 11 April 1981.9,10 He was occupied as an accountant at the time of his marriage.11 Darrell Allen Martin resided with Deborah [Stephanie] Niedfeldt in Carol Stream, Ill., on 30 May 1982.12 Darrell Allen Martin resided with Deborah [Stephanie] Niedfeldt in Carol Stream, Ill., on 26 June 1983.13 Darrell was divorced from Deborah [Stephanie] Niedfeldt in Wheaton, Ill., on 19 July 1984.14,15 On 19 November 1996 he was issued U.S. Patent 5,575,074 as co-inventor of an improved carpenter's square. He was granted sole custody of his two children 8 February 1999, by agreement. They had actually lived with him since the previous May.16
