Great-grandmother of Darrell Allen Martin.
Sarah in early 1904, age 24
Sarah was born in French Canada in June 1879.1,2,3,4,5 She was the daughter of Moise Joachim LaPlante dit Sauve and Marie Rousseau. She lived at Convent LaPrairie in La Prairie, Quebec from age 10 or 11 until she was age 16. At that point she was "smuggled into the US", and "spirited to the 'Patch P[on]d house'"; she married William Henry Martin some 3 years later.6 Sarah immigrated from French Canada in 1896.7,8,9 She was nationalized as a citizen in 1898.10 She married William Henry Martin in Mount Holly, Rutland County, Vermont, on 26 April 1899.11,6,12,8,13,14 Sarah Marie LaPlante resided in Mt. Holly on 26 April 1899.15 She was a resident in the household of Oliver Martin in the 9 June 1900 census taken in Mt. Holly as "Sarah Martin", age 20, William's wife.7 She was a resident in the household of Oliver Martin in the 29 April 1910 census taken in Mt. Holly as "Sarah Martin", mother of 3 children (all living) age 30, Oliver's daughter in law.8 She supposedly bore ten children, of whom four were stillborn. I have inserted them into the family at points that seem to make sense to me. She was a resident in the household of William Henry Martin in the 17 January 1920 census taken in Mt. Holly as "Sarah Martin" age 41, his wife.10 She was "of" Mount Holly, Rutland County, Vermont, on 25 February 1939.16 Sarah died on 10 May 1941 in Mt. Holly at age 61.17 She was buried in the center section of the Maple Grove Cemetery in East Wallingford, Wallingford, Rutland County, Vermont.18 She was described as a St. Lawrence River Valley Mohawk, according to a family tradition. She may have been born on tribal lands.
