Richard Dart

(1635 - 24 September 1724)

8-greats-grandfather of Darrell Allen Martin.
Richard was born in 1635.1,2 He appeared with some companions in New London, New London County, Connecticut in 1662. After some time the town council voted to require they become citizens or depart. Richard stayed, and bought a house 12 September 1664.3 He married Bethia (--?--) prior to 1664.4 He was granted lands in Waterford, New London County, Connecticut, and the house he built there was still standing in 1927. He became influential, and his name appears frequently in town records.5 He married Mary Roe probably in Waterford, Conn., following 1705/6.6 Richard Dart left a will dated 4 April 1711.7 Richard died on 24 September 1724 probably in Waterford, Conn..8

His will, dated 4 April 1711, shows he accumulated quite a bit of property. It also shows he was not happy with my ancestor Daniel, his oldest son. According to Richard, Daniel had "been ungrateful and treacherous to me", and had already received between 90 and 100 pounds. He therefore received a mere 5 shillings, while his younger brothers divided the considerable estate among them.9
