Alba was born in Vermont on 12 June 1844.1,2 He was the son of Nathaniel Nelson Dartt and Ruth Knowlton Perkins. He was a resident in the household of Nathaniel Nelson Dartt in the 21 August 1850 census taken in Weathersfield, Windsor County, Vermont, a student age 6.3 He was a resident in the household of Nathaniel Nelson Dartt in the 31 August 1860 census taken in Weathersfield a student age 16.4
