Horatio was born in Vermont on 27 July 1833.1,2,3,4 He was the son of William N. Gardner and Eliza Nelson. Horatio was probably age 5 and under 10 in William N. Gardner's household in the 1840 Census taken in Newbury, Orange County, Vermont. He was a resident in the household of William N. Gardner in the 6 August 1850 census taken in Newbury a student age 16.5 He married Elizabeth M. A. Cross in Newbury circa 1854.6,7 He was a head of household in the 14 August 1860 census taken in Newbury a farm laborer age 27; Elizabeth M. A. Cross resided in the same household, as "Elizabath Gardner" age 36; as did Flora E. Gardner, a student age 5; William E. Gardner, age 2; and Carlos Wheaton, a student age 12.6 He served six months and six days in the Union army, enlisting in Company C, 3rd Vermont Infantry as a private 27 November 1861. He was discharged 4 June 1862.8 He was a head of household in the 9 June 1870 census taken in Newbury a farm laborer age 37; he lived next door to his father William; Elizabeth M. A. Cross resided in the same household, as "Elizabeth Gardner" keeping house at age 45; as did Flora E. Gardner, age 14; William E. Gardner, a student age 12; and Martha Gardner, a student age 7.7 He appeared as "Horatio W.H. Gardiner" on the Veteran's Schedule of the 1890 Census taken in Newbury. His P.O. address was "So. Ryegate, Caledonia, Vt."8 Horatio died following 1890.
