George was born in Newbury, Orange County, Vermont, on 22 May 1840.1,2,3 He was the son of William N. Gardner and Eliza Nelson. George was probably age under 5 in William N. Gardner's household in the 1840 Census taken in Newbury. He was a resident in the household of William N. Gardner in the 6 August 1850 census taken in Newbury a student age 10.4 He was a resident in the household of William N. Gardner in the 4 August 1860 census taken in Newbury a farm laborer age 20.5 He served as a Private in Company C, 3rd Vermont Volunteer Infantry. George died of wounds received on 12 May 1864 at the battle of Spotsylvania in Spotsylvania, Spotsylvania County, Virginia, at age 23.
