Homer was born circa 1874.1 He was the son of Mary Margaret Keeler. He was a resident in the household of Plynn W. Dutton in the 1880 census taken in Wing River, Wadena County, Minnesota, his "ward", age 6.
I have been unable to find anything to connect Homer to either Plynn or Mary Dutton, with whom he was living in 1880. That he was called Plynn's "ward" suggests that the latter was not his father. It is marginally likely that Mary was his mother.

- [S167] That Plynn Dutton was Homer's father is tenuous. My preliminary conclusion is that Homer was the illegitimate son of Plynn and Mary, and was not legally adopted at the time his parents wed. There are other possible explanations, both reasonable and numerous.
