The Genealogy of one Vermonter, Darrell A. Martin

Enoch was born in New Hampshire circa 1783.^1,2,3 He was the son of ? Nelson. Enoch arrived in Newbury, Orange County, Vermont about 1804. He settled on what was later called "the John Miller place" below Boltonville, and was living there, near his brother Stephen, in 1832. William Gardner also lived nearby. He married Lydia? Pike say 1806. The best I can do fitting this family together suggests that Lydia? was married as young as 15 years old, and bore her first child very soon thereafter. Enoch was a head of family, age 50 to under 60 and engaged in agriculture, in the 1840 Census taken in Newbury. A possible composition of the household was Enoch and his wife Lydia?, their daughter Nancy age 19, possibly their daughter Rebecca age 25, two of their married daughters, those daughters' husbands (both engaged in agriculture), a grandson, and a granddaughter.⁴ He married Lydia Alexander in Newbury on 2 July 1842.⁵ He was a head of household in the 30 July 1850 census taken in Newbury a farmer age 67; his real estate was valued at $2,000, the equivalent of $43,500 in the year 2000; Lydia Alexander resided in the same household, as "Lydia Nelson" age 61; as did Charlotte J. Parker, a student age 15; and Hugh N. Gardner, as "Hugh Gardiner" a farmer age 18.⁵ He married ? (--?--) in Newbury prior to 1863. Enoch died on 29 January 1863 in Newbury.
