Samuel was born in Chester, Windsor County, Vermont, on 12 May 1794. He was the son of Joseph Hodgman Junior and Sarah Lawrence. Samuel was probably under 10 years old in Joseph Hodgman Junior's household in the 1800 Census taken in Springfield, Windsor County, Vermont.1 He married Abigail Placeway in Plymouth, Windsor County, Vermont, on 5 April 1817. Samuel died in Putnam Township, Livingston County, Michigan.
