Williard was born in Mason, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, on 11 September 1786. He was the son of Joseph Hodgman Junior and Sarah Lawrence. Williard was probably under 16 years old in Joseph Hodgman Junior's household in the 1790 Census taken in Raby, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire.1 Williard was probably age 10 and under 16 in Joseph Hodgman Junior's household in the 1800 Census taken in Springfield, Windsor County, Vermont.2 He married Nancy Johnson in Vermont in 1809. Williard was a head of family, as "Hodgeman, William L.", age 16 to under 26, in the 1810 Census taken in Springfield.3 Williard died on 29 August 1848 in Springfield at age 61.
