3-greats-granduncle of Darrell Allen Martin.
Joseph was born in Mason, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, circa 1772.1,2 He was the son of Joseph Hodgman Junior. Joseph was probably age 16 or over in Joseph Hodgman Junior's household in the 1790 Census taken in Raby, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire.3 He was a resident in the household of Stephen Hartwell Dutton in the 21 August 1850 census taken in Rockingham, Windham County, Vermont, as "Joseph W. Hodgman", a farmer age 78, although that this Joseph W. Hodgman and Lemira's brother Joseph Hodgman "III" are the same person is not proved.4

- [S167] There are multiple possibilities raised by the discrepancy between the date of his father's marriage to Sarah Lawrence, 1777, the composition of what is probably his father's household in the 1790 census, and his reported age in the 1850 census which would give a birth year of circa 1772. In my opinion the most likely scenario is that he is not Sarah's child.
