Great-grandfather of Darrell Allen Martin.
Herbert Dutton in 1905
Herbert was born in Springfield, Windsor County, Vermont, on 26 August 1881.1,2,3,4,5,6 He was the son of Perrin Smith Dutton and Sybil Dartt. He was a resident in the household of Perrin Smith Dutton in the 11 June 1900 census taken in Springfield a farm laborer age 18, his son.7 He married Lillie Mae Felch in Springfield on 27 August 1902.8,9,10,11,12 Herbert and Lillie forgot their wedding certificate on their honeymoon, and had problems because they looked so young. When they stopped at an inn, probably because they couldn't make it in one night to the Felch home in Newbury, they had to call back to Springfield to verify the marriage. Herbert William Dutton resided with Lillie Mae Felch in Springfield on 5 January 1905. He was a farmer.13 Herbert William Dutton appears in a photograph taken circa 1906 in Newbury, Orange County, Vermont. He was a head of household in the 9 June 1910 census taken in Springfield, a rural mail carrier and farmer living on a mortgaged farm in the Dutton District, age 28; Lillie Mae Felch resided in the same household, as "Lillie M. Dutton", mother of 3 children (all living) age 28, his wife; as did Ernest Perrin Dutton, a student age 5, his son; Derrick Allen Dutton, age 4, his son; and Millard William Dutton, age 2, his son6.14 He was a head of household in the 31 January 1920 census taken in Springfield a farmer and mail carrier, living on the farm he owned free, age 38; Lillie Mae Felch resided in the same household, as "Lillie F. Dutton", age 38, his wife; as did Ernest Perrin Dutton, a student age 16, his son; Derrick Allen Dutton, a student age 15, his son; Millard William Dutton, a student age 11, his son; Earle Herbert Dutton, as "Earl H.", a student age 7y 4m, his son; and Sybil Muriel Dutton, as "Sybel M.", age 1y 8m, his daughter.9 He married Clara Maxim? on 3 September 1932.15 Herbert William Dutton attended a reunion of the Dutton family in 1935 in Springfield. Herbert was divorced from Clara Maxim? on 30 June 1941.16 He married Clara B. (--?--) on 20 April 1942.17 In 1947, the selectmen of Springfield chose him as one of ten members of a committee to produce a second volume history of the town.18 He ran for Town Representative to the General Assembly in 1952; he was defeated in the Republican primary by Howard Finn, 1,391 to 778. This amounted to the same thing as losing the general election in those Republican days in Vermont. Finn proceeded to whip the Democratic Party's State Vice-chairman by 3,155 to 837 (outpolling General Eisenhower in Springfield, and everybody else on the ticket except Senator Flanders).19 Herbert William Dutton was among those who, with the Association for the Preservation of the Eureka School House, in October 1958 dismantled and stored the schoolhouse in space provided by Senator Flanders. Anna Jackson Hartness was Chairman of the association.20,21 Herbert died on 31 March 1967 in Springfield at age 85. He was buried in Springfield.

  21. [S167] I learned from a conversation in the summer of 2002 with my uncle, Marshall Dutton, that my great-grandfather Herbert Dutton was one of those who dismantled the school. The quotation about the restoration of the school is taken from http://www.dhca.state.vt.us/HistoricSites/html/eureka.html viewed 27 April 2005.
