Dexter was born in Mount Holly, Rutland County, Vermont, on 21 June 1935.1,2 He is the son of Clifton Oliver Martin and Annis Lizzie LaQue. Dexter was nicknamed Dex. He married Betty Mae Snoody in Waynesville, Warren County, Ohio, on 22 October 1955. Dexter was divorced from Betty Mae Snoody in December 1976. He married Grace Alice Robinson on 15 August 1977.
