The Genealogy of one Vermonter, Darrell A. Martin

Derrick was born in Sherman Hospital in Elgin, Kane County, Illinois, on 26 June 1983.^1,2,3,4 He is the son of Darrell Allen Martin and Deborah [Stephanie] Niedfeldt. Derrick Allen Martin was awarded the rank 2nd Kup "Red Belt" in Hapkido Karate 24 April 1999 in Lombard, DuPage County, Illinois.⁵ He graduated in August 2001 from Addison Trail High School in Addison, DuPage County, Illinois. He began military service on 3 September 2001 in the United States Navy; he had been in the Delayed Entry Program, and entered as a Seaman Apprentice E-2 effective 27 March 2001. On 2 November 2001 Derrick graduated from Boot Camp at Great Lakes Naval Training Center, Illinois. His grandfather, uncle Curtis, and sister Yavanna accompanied his father to his graduation from Boot Camp. It was the last time he saw his grandfather alive. On 10 May 2002, he graduated from A-school at the Navy Nuclear Power Training Command in Goose Creek, South Carolina, and was promoted to Petty Officer Third Class. He graduated from Navy Nuclear Power School, in the top half of his class, on 8 November 2002, and was reassigned to Ballston Spa, New York, for further training. He ended military service on 6 February 2003 in Groton, New London County, Connecticut, with an Honorable Discharge, for medical reasons.
