John was born in Colchester, Essex, England, circa 1628. He was the son of Ensign Hugh Welles and Frances (--?--). He came to Hatfield, Mass. from Stratford, Conn. He married Sarah Curtis say 1655. John died on 18 October 1692 in Hatfield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts.
