After his family removed to Wethersfield, CT, in the autumn of 1636, he "lived the residue of his lifetime [there], and 'died in Hartford . . . aged 53 years'." He was appointed by the General Court in 1658 to advise, with others, on "pressing" men for an expedition. He was an ensign at the time. As a sergeant, in 1677, he "was one of a committee of the town of Wethersfield, Conn., to deal with John Waddams." Hugh was born in Colchester, Essex, England, in 1625. He was the son of Ensign Hugh Welles and Frances (--?--). He married Mary Ruscoe in Wethersfield, Hartford County, Connecticut, on 19 August 1647. Hugh died on 22 December 1678 in Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut.
