Isabell was born in Vermont circa 1838.1 She was the daughter of Hugh Gardner Junior and Agnes (--?--). Agnes may not be Isabell's mother. She was a resident in the household of Hugh Gardner Junior in the 31 July 1850 census taken in Newbury, Orange County, Vermont, a student age 12.2
