William was born in Quebec, Canada, circa December 1838.1 He was the son of Henry Lower and Lydia Weller. He enlisted 12 January 1864 in the Sixth New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry, and was mustered in on the same day. He was accredited to Gorham, NH as a volunteer. During his time with the Sixth NH the regiment fought the battles of The Wilderness (6 May), Spottsylvania (12 and 18 May), North Anna (24 May), Tolopotomoy Creek (31 May) Bethesda Church (2 June), Cold Harbor (3 June), Petersburg (16-18 June), The Mine (30 July), Weldon Railroad (20 August), Poplar Spring Church (30 September), and Hatcher's Run (27 October), all in Virginia in 1864. At the unit's one additional battle, 2 April 1865 at Petersburg, VA, he was listed as missing, but later returned to his unit. "For many days during the Wilderness campaign, and for nine weeks before Petersburg, it was constantly under fire, suffering almost daily loss which made a large aggregate. The Sixth was oftener sent forward to skirmish than any other regiment, almost always doing that duty for its brigade, and often for its division. Company C usually skirmished for the regiment. The men of the Sixth . . . were esteemed the best shots in the Ninth Army Corps." He was mustered out 17 July 1865.1 He married Clarisa A. Pixley in Bethlehem, Grafton County, New Hampshire, on 11 April 1869. He married Anna Founding say 1875. He married Esther Mossey on 19 December 1882. He married Eliza C. Bliss on 30 June 1886.
