Robert was born in Ipswich, Essex County, Massachusetts, on 7 September 1693. He was the son of Thomas Knowlton and Margery Goodhue. He married Hannah Robinson on 21 November 1717. Robert relocated to Ashford, Windham County, Connecticut 1725.
