Captain William Knowlton

(say 1585 - 6 June 1639)

10-greats-grandfather of Darrell Allen Martin.
Stocking #1. William was born in England say 1585. He married Ann Elizabeth Smith in England say 1608. His title was maritime, not military. He was at least part owner of the vessel in which he and his family sailed for America, from London, about 1632-4: besides himself, his family on board consisted of his wife and four of their five surviving children. Robert stayed in England (Mary had died in childhood). One tradition has it that Captain William died on the voyage, and was buried on shore. Rev. Stocking argues that he settled in Hingham, MA, about 1635, and died (probably on a voyage along the coast) in 1639 and was buried in Shelburne, Nova Scotia. William died on 6 June 1639 in Nova Scotia, Canada. He was buried in Shelburne, Nova Scotia, Canada.
