Ryegate's location in Vermont Ryegate was granted a charter 8 September 1763 by New Hampshire Governor Benning Wentworth.

It was settled, beginning in late 1774, by the "Scotch-American Company of Farmers", formed in Inchinnan, Scotland in 1773.
