| Josephus was born in Manchester, Bennington County, Vermont, on 9 December 1820.1,2,3 He was the son of Stephen Hartwell Dutton and Lemira Hodgman. Josephus was probably age 5 and under 10 in Stephen Hartwell Dutton's household in the 1830 Census taken in Rockingham, Windham County, Vermont.4 Josephus was probably age 15 and under 20 in Stephen Hartwell Dutton's household in the 1840 Census taken in Rockingham.5 He was "of" Springfield, Windsor County, Vermont, on 21 March 1844.6 He married Nancy Arvilla Hodgman in Rockingham, on 21 March 1844.7,8,9,10 He was a head of household in the 1870 census taken in Springfield, Windsor County, Vermont, as "Josepheas Dutton" a farmer age 49; his real estate was valued at $1,400, his personal property at $400, the equivalent of $23,700 (total) in the year 2000; his home was next door to his father Stephen's; his relationship to the two Evens children is not known, but "Lepha" was the daughter of his hard-luck brother Jasper; Nancy Arvilla Hodgman resided in the same household, as "Nancy Dutton" keeping house at age 51; as did Roseltha Evens, age 16; Joseph Evens, age 12; and Lephe Ellen Dutton, as "Lepha Dutton" age 11.7 Josephus died on 7 April 1877 in Springfield, at age 56.11,12 Josephus died childless. |
