| Edith was born in Chester, Windsor County, Vermont, on 2 July 1791.1,2,3,4 She was the daughter of Stephen Dutton and Betsey Hartwell. Edith was probably in Stephen Dutton's household in the 1791 Census taken in Chester.5 Edith was probably under age 10 in Stephen Dutton's household in the 1800 Census taken in Chester.6 Edith was probably age 16 and under 26 in Stephen Dutton's household in the 1810 Census taken in Chester.7 As a child she was "warned out" of Rockingham, Windham County, Vermont, on 29 November 1814 with Stephen Dutton.8,9 Edith was probably age 26 and under 45 in Stephen Dutton's household in the 1820 Census taken in Rockingham, Windham County, Vermont.10 Edith was probably age 30 and under 40 in Stephen Dutton's household in the 1830 Census taken in Rockingham.11 She kept a boarding house in Lowell, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.12,13 She was a head of household in the 1850 census taken in Lowell, Mass., age 55; Betsey Dutton 2nd resided in the same household, age 57; as did Lois Dutton, age 53; James M. Hardy, age 28; Len Sargent, age 26; Philip C. Garrett, age 24; and Jan Ray, age 18.14 Edith died of tuberculosis on 27 May 1851 at 14 Swamp Blocks in Lowell, Mass., at age 59.15,16,17 Edith died unmarried.18 |
