| Stephen was born in Chelmsford, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, on 7 January 1753.1,2,3,4 He was the son of James Dutton Junior and Edith Robbins. He married Betsey Hartwell on 23 February 1775.5,6,7 A Stephen Dutton appeared in a census in Westmoreland, Cheshire County, New Hampshire, in 1776.8 Stephen was a head of family in the 1791 Census taken in Chester, Windsor County, Vermont.9 Stephen was a head of family, mistakenly as age 26 to under 45, in the 1800 Census taken in Chester.10 Stephen was a head of family, age 45 and up, in the 1810 Census taken in Chester.11 He was "warned out" of Rockingham, Windham County, Vermont, on 29 November 1814.12,13 Stephen was a head of family, engaged in agriculture age 45 and up, in the 1820 Census taken in Rockingham, Windham County, Vermont.14 Stephen was a head of family, age 70 to 80, in the 1830 Census taken in Rockingham.15 He settled in Westmoreland, N.H., later removing to Putney, Rockingham, and Chester, where he kept a hotel. Stephen and his wife Betsey lived in Chester for a good part of their lives.16,17 He went after his wife Betsey died to Lowell, Mass.18 Stephen died on 19 October 1835 in Lowell, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, at age 82. He possibly died at his daughter Edith's boarding house.19,20 He was buried in the School Street Cemetery in Lowell, Mass..21,22 |
