William Henry Martin
William was born in Brandon, Rutland County, Vermont, on 5 March 1875.1,2,3,4,5,6 He was the son of Oliver Martin and Julia May Hulbert. He was a resident in the household of Oliver Martin in the 9 June 1880 census taken in Brandon as "Willie" age 5 at school, his son.7 He was a blacksmith, following the family trade. Between 1910 and 1920 he established his own blacksmith shop, probably at his home8. According to Tarbell, "William Martin probably ran the last [blacksmith] shop in town in the lower part of his home at Mt. Holly Depot where Winston Fish more recently lived."9 William Henry Martin resided in Mount Holly, Rutland County, Vermont, on 26 April 1899.10 He married Sarah Marie LaPlante in Mt. Holly on 26 April 1899.11,12,13,14,15,16 He was a resident in the household of Oliver Martin in the 9 June 1900 census taken in Mt. Holly a blacksmith, age 26, head of the second family in the dwelling (William could read and write, but Oliver was illiterate).17 He was a resident in the household of Oliver Martin in the 29 April 1910 census taken in Mt. Holly a blacksmith in his father's shop age 35, Oliver's son.14 He was a head of household in the 17 January 1920 census taken in Mt. Holly as "William E. Martin", a blacksmith in his own shop probably in the home he owned on the Mt. Holly Station Road, age 44; Sarah Marie LaPlante resided in the same household, as "Sarah Martin" age 41, his wife; as did William Hiram Martin, a railroad section hand age 17, his son; Carl Moses Martin, a dairy farm laborer age 16, his son; Clifton Oliver Martin, a student age 14, his son; Alfred John Martin, as "Alfred C." a student age 8, his son; Arnold Charles Martin, as "Arnold J." age 5, his son; and Elizabeth Shirley Julia Martin, age 3y 6m, his daughter.8 He was "of" Mount Holly, Rutland County, Vermont, on 25 February 1939.18 William died on 26 September 1959 almost certainly in the convalescent home that was run by his daughter-in-law Annis Martin, in the old Black River Academy building in Ludlow, Windsor County, Vermont, at age 84.8,19 He was buried in the center section of the Maple Grove Cemetery in East Wallingford, Wallingford, Rutland County, Vermont.20
