(17 June 1788 - 2 June 1870)
3 gen navigation 3 gen. navigation
4th great-grandmother of Darrell Allen Martin.

Catherine was born in Vermont, on 17 June 1788.1,2,3 She was the daughter of ? Palmer. She married Abraham Gibson in Grafton, Windham County, Vermont, on 12 December 1812.4,5,6,7 She was a resident in the household of John P. Gibson in the 13 September 1850 census taken in Shrewsbury, Rutland County, Vermont, as "Catharine Gibson" age 62.8 She was a resident in the household of John P. Gibson in the 1860 census taken in Shrewsbury, as "Catherine Gibson" age 72.9 Catherine died on 2 June 1870 in Shrewsbury, at age 81.10 She was buried in the Center Cemetery in Shrewsbury.11,12 Her relationships are somewhat confusing and mostly a matter of conjecture. The results I have given are based on an analysis of 1850 and 1860 Shrewsbury census records, and hopefully educated guesswork. They are NOT all proven, especially as regards her sister and neice, both named Lucinda.

  8. [S44] Gibson, John, 1850 Census Shrewsbury, VT, My reconstruction of his relationship to the three women in his household in the 1850 census should be regarded as tentative at best. I conclude that John was the son of Catherine (age 62). From among several unsatisfactory alternatives, I surmise that the two women named Lucinda (aged 51 and 15) were mother and daughter, and that the "ditto" marks for the surname Gibson, in their cases, may possibly be the result of careless enumeration. It is tempting to identify the younger Lucinda with Catharine's daughter and John's sister of that name, but that Lucinda was born in 1823. The younger Lucinda in this census was age 15, about 12 years too young; confirming her age, she attended school during the year.
