Oliver was born in Brandon, Rutland County, Vermont, on 15 April 1868.1 He was the son of Oliver Martin and Julia May Hulbert. He was a resident in the household of Oliver Martin in the 22 July 1870 census taken in Shoreham, Addison County, Vermont, as "Oliver Jr." age 3.2 He was a resident in the household of Oliver Martin in the 9 June 1880 census taken in Brandon, age 12 at school, his son.3 He married Mary Howard in Mount Holly, Rutland County, Vermont, on 8 August 1894. He went to Minot, North Dakota, without his wife, who divorced him. Oliver was divorced from Mary Howard say 1900.
