| Julia was born in Vermont, on 22 June 1849.1,2,3,4 She was the daughter of John Hulbert and Amelia (--?--). An alternate form of her name was Hurlbert.5 She was a resident in the household of John Hulbert in the 22 June 1860 census taken in Brandon, Rutland County, Vermont, as "Julia Hurlbert" a student age 10.5 She married Oliver Martin in Vermont, in 1866.6,7,8,9 She was a resident in the household of Oliver Martin in the 22 July 1870 census taken in Shoreham, Addison County, Vermont, as "Julia Martin" age 20.10 She was a resident in the household of Oliver Martin in the 9 June 1880 census taken in Brandon, as "Julia Martin" keeping house at age 32, his wife.11 She was a resident in the household of Oliver Martin in the 9 June 1900 census taken in Mount Holly, Rutland County, Vermont, as "Julia Martin", mother of 6 children (5 living), age 50, his wife.12 She was a resident in the household of Oliver Martin in the 29 April 1910 census taken in Mt. Holly, as "Julia Martin", mother of 6 children (5 living) age 60, his wife.8 Julia, probably no older than 17, married 28-year-old Oliver within a year of arriving in the U.S.. By 1868 she had given birth to Oliver Jr. She probably spent most of her life in a French-speaking household. In 1900, at age 50, she was living with her husband, Oliver, who could neither read nor write English; with her son, William, who could; with her daughter-in-law Sarah (LaPlante), who had immigrated four years earlier; and with Joseph Lebee, a boarder, who had arrived in this country only in late 1898. Julia died on 29 December 1936 at age 87. She was buried in the Pleasant Street Cemetery in Ludlow, Windsor County, Vermont. |
