Oliver Martin, about 1890
Oliver was born in French Canada in January 1838.1,2,3,4,5,6 He was the son of Lewis Martin and Eliza Wells. English was his native tongue, according to at least one census. He was "of" Sherbrooke, Comté Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada, before circa 1860.7 Oliver immigrated from French Canada in 1861.8,9 He married Julia May Hulbert in Vermont in 1866.10,11,8,12 He was a head of household in the 22 July 1870 census taken in Shoreham, Addison County, Vermont, age 23, a blacksmith and citizen aged 23 and up; Julia May Hulbert resided in the same household, as "Julia Martin" age 20; as did Oliver Martin Junior, as "Oliver Jr." age 3; and Alfred Martin, as "Fred E" age 4/12.13 He was a head of household in the 9 June 1880 census taken in Brandon, Rutland County, Vermont, a blacksmith age 35; Julia May Hulbert resided in the same household, as "Julia Martin" keeping house at age 32, his wife; as did Oliver Martin Junior, age 12 at school, his son; Alfred Martin, as "Freddie" age 10 at school, his son; Eugene Francis Martin, age 7 at school, his son; William Henry Martin, as "Willie" age 5 at school, his son; Joseph Martin, age 3, his son; and Julia May Martin, age 1/12, his daughter.14 He was a head of household in the 9 June 1900 census taken in Mount Holly, Rutland County, Vermont, a blacksmith, probably working from a shop in his mortgaged house on the Hortonville Road, age 62; Julia May Hulbert resided in the same household, as "Julia Martin", mother of 6 children (5 living), age 50, his wife; as did William Henry Martin, a blacksmith, age 26, head of the second family in the dwelling (William could read and write, but Oliver was illiterate); Sarah Marie LaPlante, as "Sarah Martin", age 20, William's wife; and Joseph Lebee, a boarder.9 He was a head of household in the 29 April 1910 census taken in Mt. Holly a blacksmith in his own shop, age 74; Julia May Hulbert resided in the same household, as "Julia Martin", mother of 6 children (5 living) age 60, his wife; as did William Henry Martin, a blacksmith in his father's shop age 35, Oliver's son; Sarah Marie LaPlante, as "Sarah Martin", mother of 3 children (all living) age 30, Oliver's daughter in law; William Hiram Martin, a student age 7, Oliver's grandson; Carl Moses Martin, a student age 6, Oliver's grandson; and Clifton Oliver Martin, age 5, Oliver's grandson.8 Oliver died on 12 August 1917 in Shaftsbury, Bennington County, Vermont, at age 79. He was buried in 1917 in Arlington, Bennington County, Vermont. He was re-buried in 1921 in the Pleasant Street Cemetery in Ludlow, Windsor County, Vermont. The family had the body moved.
