Nancy was born in Newbury, Orange County, Vermont, on 22 February 1850.1,2 She was the daughter of William N. Gardner and Eliza Nelson. Nancy Jane Gardner was often called Jane. She was a resident in the household of William N. Gardner in the 6 August 1850 census taken in Newbury, age 4/12.3 She was a resident in the household of William N. Gardner in the 4 August 1860 census taken in Newbury, as "Jane" a student age 10.4
