John was born in Newbury, Orange County, Vermont, on 17 February 1838.1,2,3 He was the son of William N. Gardner and Eliza Nelson. John was probably age under 5 in William N. Gardner's household in the 1840 Census taken in Newbury. He was a resident in the household of William N. Gardner in the 6 August 1850 census taken in Newbury, a student age 13.4 He was a resident in the household of William N. Gardner in the 4 August 1860 census taken in Newbury, a farm laborer age 22.5 He married Hannah Peach say 1865.
