Mary was born in Vermont, on 7 October 1835.1,2 She was the daughter of William N. Gardner and Eliza Nelson. Mary was probably age under 5 in William N. Gardner's household in the 1840 Census taken in Newbury, Orange County, Vermont. She was a resident in the household of William N. Gardner in the 6 August 1850 census taken in Newbury, a student age 14.3
