Mary was born in Vermont, circa 1848.1 She was the daughter of John Hulbert and Amelia (--?--). She was a resident in the household of John Hulbert in the 22 June 1860 census taken in Brandon, Rutland County, Vermont, as "Mary Hurlbert" a student age 12.2
