Hugh was born in Ryegate, Caledonia County, Vermont, on 29 May 1812.1 He was the son of Hugh Gardner and Mary Nelson. He is probably a twin of his sister Hannah. He married Nancy Henderson say 1830. The question of Hugh's children's mother's identity is still open. He married Agnes (--?--) circa 1835.2 He was a head of household in the 31 July 1850 census taken in Newbury, Orange County, Vermont, a farmer age 38; his real estate was valued at $2,000, the equivalent of $43,500 in the year 2000; Agnes (--?--) resided in the same household, age 35; as did Hannah Gardner, a student age 14; Isabell Gardner, a student age 12; Eliza Gardner, a student age 9; Harriet Gardner, a student age 6; James Gardner, a student age 4; and George Bayley, a farmer age 30.2 Hugh died on 1 May 1869 at age 56.
