Mary was born in Scotland, in March 1772. She was the daughter of William Neilson and Jean Stewart. She and her family sometimes spelled their name "Neilson", but it was always pronounced [NELL-sunn]. She married Hugh Gardner in Ryegate, Caledonia County, Vermont, on 9 February 1791. Mary died on 6 October 1825 in Ryegate, at age 53.
