Carlos was born in New York, circa 1848.1 He was the son of ? Wheaton and Elizabeth M. A. Cross. He was a resident in the household of Michael Cross in the 30 July 1850 census taken in Newbury, Orange County, Vermont, age 2.2 He was a resident in the household of Horatio W. H. Gardner in the 14 August 1860 census taken in Newbury, a student age 12.3
