Hugh was born in Newbury, Orange County, Vermont, on 22 August 1831.1,2,3 He was the son of William N. Gardner and Eliza Nelson. Hugh was probably age 5 and under 10 in William N. Gardner's household in the 1840 Census taken in Newbury. He was a resident in the household of Enoch Nelson in the 30 July 1850 census taken in Newbury, as "Hugh Gardiner" a farmer age 18.4 There are several with the name Hugh Gardner in Newbury, Vermont, but none except this one are the right age for the 1850 census household of Enoch Nelson. Enoch was also this Hugh's grandfather. He married Mary A. Elkins in Newbury, on 11 September 1859. He was a resident in the household of William N. Gardner in the 7 June 1870 census taken in Newbury, a farm laborer age 38.5 I have no documentation for why Hugh was living and working on his father's farm in 1870, just before his second marriage; his probable four children by his first wife, all still minors, were not with them.5 He married Clarissa Emery in Newbury, on 29 August 1870.
