Lephe was born in Weathersfield, Windsor County, Vermont, on 16 August 1858.1,2,3,4 She was the daughter of Jasper Willard Dutton and Ellen M. Tolles. It appears Lephe was named after her father's second wife, taking her middle name from her mother. She was a resident in the household of Jasper Willard Dutton in the 3 September 1860 census taken in Weathersfield, as "Lepha" age 2.5 She was a resident in the household of Josephus Hodgman Dutton in the 1870 census taken in Springfield, Windsor County, Vermont, as "Lepha Dutton" age 11.6 She married Fred Pierce on 6 January 1886.7
