Great-great-grandmother of Darrell Allen Martin.
Sarah was born in County Down, Ireland, circa 1863.1 She was the daughter of William Mooney and ? (--?--). Her father may have been left with more than he could handle alone, when Sarah's mother died. It is an old story and a sad one, often retold. Edward Crowney (if that was really his name) may have been Sarah's long-time sweetheart, a season's romance, or a married man out on the town. Whichever was true, when she was found to be carrying his child, Sarah was not permitted to marry him. Sarah Mooney emigrated in July 1881 from Ireland. She arrived in Boston on the S.S. Palmyra, already several months pregnant.2 She apparently found work in Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts as a "domestic", perhaps with the help of her cousin Mrs. Elizabeth McDermott.3 She was admitted 10 December 1881 to the State Almshouse Hospital in Tewksbury, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. Her child Catherine was born on 15 December 1881 in Tewksbury, Mass..4 Sarah died of eclampsia on 1 February 1882 in the State Almshouse Hospital in Tewksbury, Mass..5
