John Hulbert
(circa 1820 - )
3rd great-grandfather of Darrell Allen Martin.

John was born in French Canada, circa 1820.1,2,3 An alternate form of his name was Hurlbert.4 He married Amelia (--?--) say 1843.5 He was a head of household in the 22 June 1860 census taken in Brandon, Rutland County, Vermont, as "John Hurlbert", a day laborer age 30 [sic]; his personal property was valued at $100, the equivalent of $2,040 in the year 2000; Amelia (--?--) resided in the same household, as "Amelia Hurlbert" age 35, his wife; as did Amelia Hulbert, as "Amelia Hurlbert" a student age 16; Mary Hulbert, as "Mary Hurlbert" a student age 12; and Julia May Hulbert, as "Julia Hurlbert" a student age 10.4

10-generation pedigree for Darrell Allen Martin

Children of John Hulbert and Amelia (--?--):
Amelia Hulbert   (ca 1844 - )
Mary Hulbert   (ca 1848 - )
Julia May Hulbert +   (22 Jun 1849 - 29 Dec 1936)

Cited documentation:

  1. [S13] Martin, Oliver, 1900 Census Mt Holly, VT, as Julia's father b. "Canada (Fr."
  2. [S14] Martin, Oliver, 1880 Census Brandon, VT, as Julia's father b. "Canada."
  3. [S194] Hurlbert, John, 1860 Census Brandon, VT, as "John Hurlbert" age 30 (which I surmise to be an error for 40), b. "Canada E."
  4. [S194] Hurlbert, John, 1860 Census Brandon, VT.
  5. [S194] Hurlbert, John, 1860 Census Brandon, VT, involving some guesswork; I have surmised that the 1860 census misrecords John's age as 30 when it should be 40, but if 30 is correct then the whole family structure is open for question.
The author strongly cautions the reader about making any assumption concerning the existence of uncited documentation (whether the assumption is that it does exist -- or that it does not).
