James was born in Vermont, circa 1845.1 He was the son of Hugh Gardner Junior and Agnes (--?--). Agnes may not be James' mother. He was a resident in the household of Hugh Gardner Junior in the 31 July 1850 census taken in Newbury, Orange County, Vermont, a student age 4.2
