He was the son of Warren F. Severance and Ancy Clementine Dutton.
He married Olive Cutler on 30 October 1895.4,5
He was a head of household in the 11 June 1900 census taken in Springfield, Windsor County, Vermont, a farmer on a mortgaged farm age 29; his home was next door to his uncle Perrin Dutton's; Olive Cutler resided in the same household, age 33, mother of no children, his wife; as did Agnes T. Whitney, age 25, a public school teacher.6
According to family tradition, Derrick Dutton Severance went to get the doctor the January 1905 night that Derrick Allen Dutton was born, hence the name. The child was his cousin Herbert's son.
