Derrick was born in Rockingham, Windham County, Vermont, on 13 April 1871.1,2,3 He was the son of Warren F. Severance and Ancy Clementine Dutton. He married Olive Cutler on 30 October 1895.4,5 He was a head of household in the 11 June 1900 census taken in Springfield, Windsor County, Vermont, a farmer on a mortgaged farm age 29; his home was next door to his uncle Perrin Dutton's; Olive Cutler resided in the same household, age 33, mother of no children, his wife; as did Agnes T. Whitney, age 25, a public school teacher.6 According to family tradition, Derrick Dutton Severance went to get the doctor the January 1905 night that Derrick Allen Dutton was born, hence the name. The child was his cousin Herbert's son. He was a head of household in the 11 June 1910 census taken on Parker Hill, Springfield, Windsor County, Vermont; Olive Cutler resided in the same household; as did Miriam Elsie Severance; Cutler Frost Severance; and Silas Cutler. He was a head of household in the 1920 census taken in Rockingham; Olive Cutler resided in the same household; as did Miriam Elsie Severance; and Cutler Frost Severance. He was a head of household in the 1930 census taken in Saxtons River, Rockingham, Windham County, Vermont; Olive Cutler resided in the same household; as did Miriam Elsie Severance.
